A Straightforward Open Gym on Syros
If you’re looking for a normal, open-gym experience on Syros, Alterlife is perhaps the most straightforward option on the island. No big personality, just a large commercial gym where you can walk in, put your headphones on, and train.
First Impressions & Vibe
Alterlife Syros is fairly spacious, with decent enough natural light. It feels like a classic chain gym, because it is one. I trained there many times between 9–11am, and the crowd was always light, mixed in age, and generally friendly. Evenings are busier, but it never felt chaotic.
The soundtrack is generic techno. Easy enough to ignore.
One unintentionally entertaining detail: the wall of TVs in the cardio area. There really is something for everyone, all at once. Local news on one screen, Masha and the Bear on another, and a constant bikini swimsuit show on a third. It’s oddly mesmerizing.
Equipment & Training Reality
Alterlife works best if your training leans toward machines, hypertrophy work, or general fitness, rather than barbell-focused strength training.
There’s a large bank of treadmills (the cardio of choice at this gym apparently) a few bikes, and plenty of selectorized strength machines, and cable stations that make bodybuilding-style workouts doable. The replaceable handles on the cable machines have that familiar grubbiness that comes from long use in a humid environment. There’s also a small cross-training and personal training area with kettlebells, a boxing bag, yoga mats, and some basic bodyweight equipment.
One thing to know going in: there is only one pull-up bar, and it’s located in the section reserved for their coach-led small group classes. That said, I did drop in and use it when I needed to, which wasn’t an issue — just something to be aware of if pull-ups are a staple in your programming.
Another important limitation for lifters: there is no free barbell squat rack. Squats are done on a Smith machine only, which I was not thrilled about. Add to that the fact that the dumbbells are only half-labeled — which bothered me more than it probably should have — and you get a gym that’s functional, but not exactly precision optimized for lifters.
That said, I trained here often mostly lifting, using machines, and occasionally running small HIIT-style sessions in a quiet corner with kettlebells, dumbbells, and mats, and it all worked fine.
Classes, Extras, and Oddities
Alterlife offers small group cross-training classes and Pilates classes at an additional cost, including reformer Pilates. They also appear to have a tanning room, though I never asked and can’t say for sure what the setup is there.
This isn’t a class-driven gym. Classes feel like an optional layer rather than a core offering.
Cleanliness & Comfort
This isn’t what I’d call pristine, but it’s serviceable. Nothing felt gross, just a bit worn in places.
One small but noticeable detail for travelers: you can’t refill your water bottle for free. Water costs €0.50. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.
Recommended For
Alterlife Syros is a good fit if you’re looking for open gym access and the freedom to run your own workout while traveling. It works best for people whose training leans toward machines, cables, and general fitness rather than heavy barbell lifts.
The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is low-pressure, which makes it easy to walk in, train, and leave without friction. I always felt comfortable doing my own thing here, including the occasional small group HIIT session tucked into a quiet corner.
My take: if you want a no-nonsense, do-your-own-program gym on Syros, Alterlife is the dependable option. It won’t wow you, but it will let you train — and sometimes that’s exactly enough.
TL/DR
What it is: A large commercial gym on Syros with open access and plenty of machines.
Best for: Travelers who want to run their own workout without fuss.
Not for: Barbell-focused lifters or anyone chasing a boutique experience.
Vibe: Bright, busy, slightly worn, and easygoing.
Bottom line: It won’t impress you, but it will let you train in peace
